Some of the week’s highlights include No. 13 Sara Errani defeating Venus Williams in the third round of women’s singles on Aug. 29, and No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki upsetting No. 5 Maria Sharapova in the fourth round on Aug. 31, in a 2-hour, 37-minute match. Wozniacki would go on to defeat Errani in dominating fashion— 6-0, 6-1— on Sept 2 to move into the semifinal round of the women’s singles. Also, Shuai Peng of China, the 39th ranked female player, made it into her first-ever semifinals at the US Open with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Belinda Bencic in the women’s quarterfinals round on Sept 2. The men’s singles side featured a marathon match between two of the world’s top young players. No. 10 Kei Nishikori of Japan defeated No. 5 Milos Raonic of Canada in a 4-hour, 19-minute match that ended at 2:26 a.m. on Sept. 2. Then later that day No. 20 Gael Monfils of France upset No. 7 Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets. But probably the most exciting news of the first week was the story of 15-year-old Catherine “CiCi” Bellis of California. In her first Grand Slam match ever, Bellis defeated No. 12 Dominika Cibulkova, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 on Aug. 26. And then with a patriotic crowd of more than 2,500 fans behind her on Court 17 on Aug. 28, Bellis came just short of pulling another upset in her second match against world No. 48 Zarina Diyas.
