By Brianna Ellis editorial@qns.com/@QNS As Flushing students expand their knowledge, their place of learning is also getting a muchneeded extension. A new four-story building will be constructed on the existing campus of P.S. 24 Andrew Jackson School, located at 45-57 Union St. The expansion will increase the capacity of the school, which is currently jam-packed and has two trailers parked on its basketball courts. Councilman Peter Koo stated that the anticipated two-year project will allow students to regain access to the library and computer labs, which are both being used as classrooms right now. He also elaborated on the school’s new features in a press release. “The P.S. 24 expansion is a welcome addition to our community that will add desperately needed capacity to one of our most overcrowded schools. This expanded school will provide a state of the art cafeteria, rooftop gym, music and dance studio, science lab, art studio, more classrooms for every grade and a new pre-K program,” he said. “This project has been a long time coming, and I’m very excited that the city is finally seeking to address some of our serious overcrowding and capital infrastructure needs here in Flushing.” The school will be designed by Neptune, New Jersey-based Massa Multimedia Architects and the city’s School Construction Authority is the developer. The Courier contacted the New York City Department of Education (DOE) for additional details and is awaiting a response.
