Voelker Orth celebrates a decade The Voelker Orth Museum celebrated the 10th anniversary of its opening with a luncheon at the Sheraton LaGuardia East on Sunday, July 28. More than 60 patrons and community leaders came together to support the organization which offers public programs in horticulture, local history and the arts. The celebratory luncheon provided an opportunity to share stories, enjoy fine dining and music, and learn a little about what is on the horizon as the Voelker Orth Museum ventures into the future. The program offered a Taste of Voelker Orth, including a musical performance by Stephen Joseph’s Earth Trio and talk of the lovely floral centerpieces donated by Keil Brother’s nursery. Councilmember Peter Koo, Assemblymember Ron Kim and Senator Tony Avella addressed the luncheon and presented proclamations recognizing the work of the organization. Congressmember Grace Meng and Borough President Helen Marshall also offered congratulations. The Museum opened in 2003 following several years of restoration to the 1890s property that had been home to three generations of a German immigrant family. The Museum was established with the bequest from the late Elisabetha Orth. She left her family property and a directive for three organizations to establish a new organization. In 1997 representatives from the Queens Botanical Garden and the Audubon Society based at the Theodore Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary came together to start that work. Following the extensive restoration of the property, the Museum opened in Jun 2003.
