Although the Department of Transportation (DOT) has yet to set a timetable as to when the Citi Bike share program will come to Queens, Senator Michael Gianaris has announced he has worked with the DOT to include Astoria in the future plans. “Citi Bike will be a great addition to Astoria, which has a growing cycling community and is already one of the most bike-friendly neighborhoods in the city,” said Gianaris. Astoria now joins Long Island City and Sunnyside as future locations in the borough for Citi Bike. LIC was supposed to be part of Citi Bike’s initial phase in May, but was pushed back after equipment damages from Sandy caused a delay. The DOT previously told The Courier that although the expansion into Long Island City was delayed, it is working to bring the Citi Bike stations to the neighborhood as soon as possible. “Bike share will allow people to enjoy the neighborhood in a fun and healthy way and will help people more easily travel around western Queens, an area in dire need of better mass transit,” said Gianaris. Kids Club coming soon BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO [email protected] As more families come to Long Island City, a leading children’s enrichment center has decided to call the area home. New York Kids Club, founded in 2001, has announced it will open its 11th location in New York and the first in Queens on the ground-floor commercial space at 45-45 Center Boulevard in TF Cornerstone’s new waterfront tower. “We’re so excited,” said Pam Wolf, NY Kids Club’s founder and CEO. “So many families have been telling us about Long Island City.” The 5,000-square-foot center is expected to open in September 2014. The facility will include a state-ofthe art gymnastics center space with a giant trampoline, balance beams and sprung floors. The waterfront location will also feature three sunlit classrooms and an outdoor play space located on an outside terrace. “There has been so much excitement for this location,” said Wolf. “Our goal is for social, emotional and academic growth for every child.” NY Kids Club offers a wide range of classes such as fitness, art, music, Spanish, cooking, dance and theater for children up to age 12.
