FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com jULY 31, 2014 • PETS • The Queens Courier 15 70 Years of Saving Lives From our humble beginnings in 1944, North Shore Animal League America has grown to be the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world, saving the lives of more than 1 million homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, we are proud to look back on all we’ve accomplished and look ahead to an exciting future. A History of L i f e - S a v i n g Innovations Our original “shelter” consisted of just a few fencedin runs in a garage in Port Wa s h i n g t o n , New York, with a few animal lovers rescuing stray animals in the community. A key turning point in our history arrived in the 1960s, when Elisabeth and Alex Lewyt joined the organization. With their help, North Shore Animal League America pioneered many of the innovations that inspired the nokill movement. Over the years, our organization grew steadily both in size and in scope. Our most far-reaching rescue program, the nationwide Humane Relocation Program, is responsible for saving more than 150,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens since its inception in 1991. Through this initiative, we transport animals from overcrowded municipal shelters, puppy mills, natural disasters and other circumstances where their lives were in grave danger and bring them to the safety of our nokill headquarters, where we find them permanent, loving homes with carefully screened adopters. The League led the way once more with the launch of our mobile and cooperative adoption programs in 1995, using state-of-the-art Mobile Rescue & Adoption Units to bring animals out of the shelter and into high-traffic areas where potential adopters can meet them face to face. As a result, millions of people have abandoned the mistaken notion that shelter pets are in any way second best. Saving the Lives of Even More Mutt-i-grees® The last decade has seen continued and rapid expansion of both our mission and our campus. Our rescue work expanded in 2007 with our Puppy Mill rescue program, in which we save dogs from puppy mills: cruel and inhumane breeding operations that put profit over animal welfare. Since we began this program, 2,500 mill dogs felt grass under their feet—and tender, loving human care—all for the very first time. In 2010 we launched the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum, a c u t t i n g - e d g e Pre-K—Grade 12 program implemented in more than 2,500 schools around the country. The Curriculum is already reaching more than 1,000,000 students – the next generation of potential adopters. The program encourages awareness of shelter pets and provides students with an opportunity to acquire communication and other skills to promote adoption. A Bright Future North Shore Animal League America is poised for continued growth as we continue our lifesaving mission. As we celebrate our 70 year anniversary, what matters most to us is the work that is ahead. We thank all who contribute to our life-saving work, and we look forward to saving more lives in the years to come!
