BY CHRIS BUMBACA For the third year in a row, instructors and students part of the High School to Art School (HS2AS) program received the Queens Council on the Arts Grant Award from Con Edison. Con Edison’s director of community and public affairs, Carol Conslato, presented Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer, executive director of Queens Council on the Arts, along with Yeong Ji Yoo, HS2AS instructor, and students with a generous contribution in support of the HS2AS program. The grant totaled $10,000, and will be used to fund the HS2AS program. The money will help 55 high school juniors and seniors develop their portfolios and apply to some of the best art schools in the country. HS2AS students experienced great academic success this year. Every student in the class of 2014 gained admission to a top-20 nationally ranked university, and accumulated $1,021,400 in scholarship awards. Destinations for the graduating class this year include the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising, Maryland Institute of Art, New York City College of Technology, Pratt Institute, The Cooper Union and Vassar College. Students draw inspiration from their surroundings and create works to build their portfolios that give them a competitive advantage when applying to art school.
