Mets third baseman David Wright will be starting for the National League team in the MLB All-Star Game at Citi Field on July 16. Mets phenom Matt Harvey will make his fi rst appearance in the midsummer classic. The Amazin’s Wright outpaced San Francisco Giants Pablo Sandoval, who bested the captain for the starting spot last year. Wright, who fans dubbed “Captain America” during the World Baseball Classic, is currently batting .306, with 13 home runs. This will be his seventh All-Star Game appearance. In one of the biggest surprises of the 2013 baseball season, Harvey is expected to be the starting pitcher for the All-Star Game. Harvey currently has a 7-2 record with a 2.27 ERA and 141 strikeouts. The last time the Mets hosted the All-Star Game, in 1964 — the fi rst season for Shea Stadium — Ron Hunt was the only Met to play in the game. All-Star voting ended on July 4 at 11:59 p.m. The results were announced on July 6 at 6:30 p.m. on a Fox special All-Star Game show. As for Yankees, second baseman Robinson Cano will start for the American League while closer Mariano Rivera was selected to the All-Star team for his fi nal season.
