36 THE QUEENS COURIER • JULY 11, 2013 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com FLEA, FOOD... & MUSIC Songza has the beat for LIC Flea BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO aaltamirano@queenscourier.com Whether you are working out at the gym or checking out the new LIC Flea in Long Island City, Songza has the right playlist for you. Based in LIC, Songza is a free music streaming service that delivers the listener the right music at the right time through the biggest library of expertly-curated playlists via Android, iPod, iPad or PC. All the playlists are handpicked by music experts and DJs. “We’ve always been keen in figuring out the best way to help people discover music,” said Eric Davich, Songza co-founder. “Music is something that people consume as a lifestyle enhancement. It’s not something people consume as a product.” The music on the playlists on Songza, which on average feature 60 to 80 songs, are personalized to each listener based on implicit behavior, like pressing thumbs up or down to a song, or explicit behavior, such as when you listen to certain music. Songza takes into account data such as time of day, time of week and the device you are using to recommend playlists based on the specific moment. “It would get you to the right music that would change your mood based on context and be able to evolve and stay fresh,” said Davich. Songza, which now provides music in the United States and Canada, offered the music for opening day of the LIC Flea & International Food Bazaar featuring a fun mix of new summer tracks and mixing by DJ Jilly Hendrix and DJ Whitney Day. “I’ve been to a lot of flea markets in my neighborhood, but I’ve never DJed at something like this before,” said Day, who just started working for Songza as a playlist curator. “It’s a rare occasion for DJs to set up their equipment outside. I’m always excited to play outside.” A playlist is now featured on Songza just for the LIC Flea. It includes both crowd-pleasing pop songs and unknown emerging artists. The Songza headquarters will also be moving right next to the lot LIC Flea calls home. “It will evolve as the Flea evolves and as more DJs play at the Flea,” said Davich. “We’re really excited it’s right in our backyard. It’s a really great event.” To find your perfect playlist, visit www.songza. com or download the Songza app to your device. LIC Flea is located at 5-25 46th Avenue in LIC. It is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Image Courtesy of Eric Davich CORNER FISH MARKET PAK & PARK The Corner Fish Market is a legendary shop in Jamaica that has been around for generations. Though the shop is known for its fresh fish and seafood, the Corner Fish Market stand at the LIC Flea will be selling a number of delicious, cooked seafood dishes. “We’re using this vehicle for promotion and to gain momentum for our business,” said owner Su-In Park. “We’re offering a different menu to show people some of the things you can do with fresh seafood.” The Corner Fish Market has booked its spot at LIC Flea for eight weeks, and will be there at least until mid-August on both Saturday and Sunday. You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter. CUSTOM 3D STUFF www.custom3dstuff.com Todd Blatt is a mechanical engineer who uses groundbreaking 3D-printing technology to create intricate objects designed on his computer. Ranging from jewelry to “little curiosities,” Blatt sells his unique plastic and metal shapes, which he says are very intricate and “are not things you could make molds of.” After generating a model on the computer, Blatt is then able to create objects using digital fabrication. “I have a lot of designs that I’ve already made, because I’ve been doing this for years,” he said. “But if a customer were to bring a design or idea that they wanted me to make I could design it and ship it to them, or they could come pick it up at the Flea Market.” Custom 3D Stuff will be at the LIC Flea on Sundays throughout the summer. MAARTZE BY IZA Maarte by Iza is a jewelry line founded by Annaliza Huffnagle, and differs from other jewelry lines because Huffnagle considers herself to be a totally eco-friendly designer. All of her merchandise is hand-made, and she reimagines and upcycles all of her material herself. After starting two years ago, Huffnagle has recently put all of her energy into Maarte by Iza, and is thrilled to be going to the LIC Flea this year so that she can share her custom jewelry with people at the market. Huffnagle is particularly excited to show off her bracelets, which she says are her favorite item due to their variety and versatility. She will be at the LIC Flea every Saturday, and also takes customized orders. TREE D PATCHWORK www.treedpatchwork.com Tree D Patchwork is one of the more original ideas to come to the LIC Flea this year. Founded and owned by Meryl Harvey, Tree D Patchwork’s specialty is creating a canvas and artwork from recycled clothing and fabrics, and presenting it in a way that looks like a three-dimensional tree. The concept may be hard to envision, but rest assured that the end product of Harvey’s efforts alone are enough to merit a trip to the LIC Flea on a Saturday, which is when she will be attending. This year’s LIC is Harvey’s first market ever, and she is also willing and able to create custom art using fabrics that customers bring her. “I’m very excited that the LIC is going to be my first market experience, so come by and get your custom artwork!” VIVIAN JEWLRY CORP www.vivianjewelrynyc.com Vivian Park will be at the LIC Flea this year representing her jewelry store, Vivian Jewlry Corp. After working at a handmade jewelry store in Manhattan, Park realized that she could do just as good of a job on her own, and five years ago she founded Vivivan Jewlry. In addition to selling her bracelets, necklaces, earrings and more, Park is also a painter, and will be selling some of her artwork at the LIC Flea as well. She is also willing and able to make custom jewelry, and will be at the market on Saturdays and Sundays. “I really like it when people buy my jewelry and then they send me an email saying that the person they bought it for loved it. I love that feeling, because I’m happy when my customers are happy!”
