Mexico has lots of big iguanas and lizards running around. The fi rst place I stayed here was a fancy, big hotel. I got swimming lessons and snorkeled with really old turtles. On another day, I went to an underground cave. There, I saw the roots of trees and these kinds of birds that drink water from the caves. We went in the water where the roots of trees drink water. It is cold and very deep, not even grown-ups can reach the fl oor! The water is very clean, just like the water you drink. There are so many fi shes in the cave. There are some places in the cave where you can reach the fl oor, with this special kind of sand that you cannot fi nd anywhere else. The most interesting part of the caves are these rocks that hang down like icicles. Clean water drips down from these rocks, but our tour guide told us not to touch them or we would damage them. The icicle rocks are really called stalactites. After spending a week in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, I fl ew to another place in Mexico. This small town where my dad was raised is called Catemaco. This place looks really different. I noticed a lot of animals, like cats and dogs and lizards running around. And they don’t seem to belong to anyone. This trip has been a lot of fun! On the plane ride back to New York, I am going to remember how much fun I had. In August I will be fl ying somewhere else! I hope you have a lot of fun too this summer! Have a great time anywhere, and remember to think how much fun it was! Isabella Taxilaga was the grand prize winner of the Be Kind People Project’s nationals student writing contest.
