Celebrating July 4 with a bang in Queens

Th ey owned the night like
the Fourth of July.
Astoria celebrated
Independence Day early on
June 30, as thousands gathered
on the great lawn at
Astoria Park for a Queens
Symphony Orchestra concert,
followed by a fi reworks
extravaganza.
Th e Central Astoria Local
Development Corporation
sponsored the event, and from
the looks of things, everyone
who turned out for the
celebration had a blast. Th e
orchestra performed patriotic
tunes that got everyone into
the spirit before the Grucci
fi reworks lit up the sky.
Meanwhile, a similar fi reworks
display at Fort Totten
Park on June 28 drew thousands
of spectators to the
Bayside greenspace. City
Councilman Paul Vallone was
among the event sponsors.
Th en, on July 4, Long Island
City residents got an up-close
look at the Macy’s Fourth of
July Fireworks Extravaganza
held on the East River.
