WEDNESDAY, JULY 9 Calling all scientists! Ever wonder how science is used to solve crimes? Put on your thinking caps and join us as we combine two popular topics—using forensic science for crime scene investigations and studying wildlife issues. Investigating a wildlife crime in the classroom allows students to solve cases in the same way as the CSI heroes on television. A snack is included and the event is limited to 10 participants. This is a multi-session program so you must register for the full program. This program is for children ages 10 to 14 and will take place at the Alley Pond Environmental Center at 228-06 Northern Blvd. on July 9, 16 and 23 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The fee is $78 per child. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is hosting the fourth annual US Open job fair. For the second consecutive year, there will be two job fairs, one on July 9, followed by a second opportunity on July 10. Both US Open job fairs will be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All jobseekers are urged to arrive early, as gates will close promptly at 3 p.m. The Queens job fair is open to all residents of Queens only, and proper ID is required for entry. Jobseekers will have an opportunity to speak with US Open staff and its vendors about the various open positions, such as cooks, drivers, maintenance workers, security personnel, cashiers and customer service representatives. Applications will be available onsite to be fi lled out. For those unable to attend the job fair, applications for available positions at the US Open will be accepted through August. THURSDAY, JULY 10 The Metropolitan Opera’s Summer Recital Series returns with three talented young singers performing arias and duets for the “Metropolitan Opera Recital.” Admission is free and the event, which is from 7 to 8 p.m., will be held at Socrates Sculpture Park at 32-01 Vernon Blvd. No RSVP is required. Come celebrate and kick off the 2014 Waterfront Concert Series with the ultimate Beatles tribute band, Strawberry Fields. The location is at the Astoria Park Great Lawn at Shore Blvd. between the Hell Gate Bridge and Astoria Pool. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free. America’s oldest symphony orchestra leaves Lincoln Center to offer a free outdoor concert of priceless music at the 193rd Street Field at Cunningham Park at 193rd Street near Union Turnpike. Program to include “Don Juan” by R. Strauss, “Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks” by R. Strauss, “Vyšehrad from Má vlast” from Smetana and “Romeo and Juliet,” Overture-Fantasy by Tchaikovsky. The fair will be held at the Queens Center, located at 90-15 Queens Blvd. in Elmhurst from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be held at the food court, located on the lower level of the JCPenney wing of the mall. Some of the employers include Coca Cola Company, Time Warner Cable and United Parcel Service. The New York State Department of Labor and nonprofi t organizations will also be there to provide career counseling, including guidance for previously incarcerated individuals, as well resume writing and interview preparation advice.
