Originally built as the commissary to the studio opened by the legendary Adolph Zukor in 1920, the space is affectionately known as the Astor Room. The studio eventually became the home of Paramount Pictures, and over the next two decades, over 120 silent and sound films were produced here. From the Marx Brothers to Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson, and W.C. Fields, Astoria was home to the great talents of an exciting new industry who all dined in the Astor Room. An extremely talented staff of mixologists has updated the Astor Room to become a relevant part of today’s Astoria, and so we touched base with bartender Michael Molnar to learn some of the secrets of his favorite dishes and drinks. The Beef Tartar with a blend of Shell steak and Filet, is lightly seasoned with crushed capers, diced shallots, and chives; bound with a delicious truffle herb aioli. A true delicacy. Beefsteak Tomato Salad has thickly cut tomatoes, creamy blue cheese, red onion, Mache, and topped with a sherry vinaigrette. Perfect in the summer with fresh Long Island tomatoes Crispy Skin Striped Bass is pan roasted, on a bed of artichoke puree with toasted quinoa. Topped by sautéed oyster mushrooms, and a port wine reduction. Incredible earthy and satisfying. Mac & Cheese blends three delicious cheeses (gruyere, fontina, and white cheddar) over cavatappi pasta (long corkscrew pasta). It is lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, than toasted with a breadcrumb gratinati. Sazarac Cocktail -- Old Overholt Rye, Peychaud’s Bitters, Angostura bitters, demurara, Absinthe rinse of a rocks glass served neat with a blade of lemon. Cardamom Mint Sidecar -- Xante cognac, muddled mint and cardamom pods, fresh lemon juice, and Cointreau. Firmly shaken and served in an up glass with a sprig of mint. Check out these dishes, drinks, and more right in the heart of Astoria’s Kaufman Arts District. 34-12 36th St, Astoria, NY 11106 www.astorroom.com • (718) 255-1947 Closed Mondays • 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday1130 a.m. Sunday ADVERTORIAL EVERY MON-FRI IS HAPPY HOUR FROM 4PM-7PM 2 FOR 1 DRINKS 181-08 UNION TURNPIKE • FLUSHING 718-380-1918 Hours: Sun.-Thurs. 12 Noon - 9:30PM; Fri. 12 Noon - Midnight; Sat. - 12 Noon - 11:30 PM Try Our Tropical Island Drinks at our Cocktail Lounge 181-08 UNION TURNPIKE • FLUSHING 718-380-Open 7 Days Lunch & Dinner Every Fri. On Saturday, June 28, Sage Music, a Long Island City-based music school for all ages, hosted a renowned Colombian guitarist Irene Gomez for a live concert and an intimate master class for advanced guitar students. Aside from her usual repertoire, Gomez played three modern Colombian pieces, two of which were composed specifically for her. A number of Sage Music students had an opportunity to take Gomez’s class and hone their skills prior to the concert. Sage Music Founder Jason Sagebiel is proud of being able to bring internationally renowned artists to his school and the Long Island City community. “I really believe in building community, and doing events that bring musicians of all types together whether they be teachers, pros, amateurs, or music fans,” said Sagebiel. “It is great for students and the public to have the opportunity to interact with great concert artists. That interaction inspires the public to study music and my current students to become better musicians.” To sign up for music lessons with Sage Music in Long Island City, Queens, or in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, please contact info@sagemusic.co, call (718) 361-2922 or visit www.sagemusic.CO. The school offers courses in composition, theory, and performance for guitar, piano, voice, violin, and cello. Gomez resides in Bogota, Colombia, and is a professor of music at the National Conservatory in Bogota. To learn more about Gomez, visit www.irenegomez.com. ADVERTORIAL
