According to the Journal of American Medicine, more than one-third, or 78.6 million adults in the United States are obese. The annual medical costs associated with obesity in the U.S. are estimated to be over a hundred billion dollars more than those of normal weight. Obesity-related conditions including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 Diabetes, Gallstones, Respiratory problems, and certain types of cancer, are some of the leading causes of preventable death. One of the many screening tools used by your healthcare provider to determine obesity is Body Mass Index, or BMI. BMI applies to both adult men and women and is easily calculated by your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared and it plays an important role in determining your health. A normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. Adults with a BMI of 25 or greater are considered overweight and are considered obese if over 30. To determine if a high BMI is a health risk, your doctor would perform a full physical assessment. Dr. Sanjeev Rajpal, a board certi ed surgeon at Flushing Hospital Medical Center specializing in bariatric surgery, suggests measuring your skinfold thickness, evaluating your diet, physical activity and family history. “The best way to determine if your BMI is hurting your health and if you’re a good candidate for bariatric surgery is to fully evaluate the patient’s lifestyle, including physical condition and emotional behaviors,” says Dr. Rajpal. Since the 1970s, there has been an increase in adults with a high BMI, mostly among middle age adults 40-59 years old and adults over 60. The worst groups affected are non-Hispanic blacks, Hispanics, non-Hispanic whites, especially white women age 60 years and older, and non-Hispanic Asians. It is recommended that adults who are obese or overweight lose weight, especially if they have a family history of heart disease, smoke cigarettes, are sedentary, or have high blood pressure. Simply losing between ve and 10 percent of your current weight can help lower your risk of developing diseases associated with obesity. Flushing Hospital Medical Center offers a full range of bariatric surgery options, including laparoscopic surgery, performed by doctors using the minimally invasive da Vinci robotic system. Bariatric surgery performed using the robot allows for faster healing time, less scarring, and shorter hospital stay. Please call 718-670- 8908 for an appointment.
