Organized by Transportation Alternatives, participants will bike through Queens, visiting the neighborhoods of Astoria, Long Island City, Ridgewood, Maspeth, Rego Park, Middle Village, Forest Hills, Corona and East Elmhurst. The “rolling parade” is approximately 20 miles long, and is put on with the cooperation of the NYPD, who will be closing off intersections long enough for the tour to speed through. Registration is now open, with a cap of 1,250 riders and a fee of $15 for Transportation Alternatives members and $20 for non-members, all fees go to help the cost of the event. The jam session is open to professional jazz musicians, graduate students studying jazz and music educators. All are welcome and encouraged to come and listen. SUNDAY, JULY 14 Come and “do the twist” at Flushing Town Hall’s Rock n’ Roll House Party, part of their Free Summer Concert Series, featuring the Karlos Trapp EDITOR’S PICK Flushing Town Hall event SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, From 2 to 5 p.m. Flushing Town Hall will be hosting a yaji, an ancient Chinese custom where famous musicians, painters and calligraphers gather for an elegant garden party. This event will provide an opportunity for those in attendance to watch beautiful calligraphy and paintings be created before their eyes. Come 15 minutes early to enjoy a bit of traditional Taiwanese puppet theater: “Monkey King VS. Bull King,” which will feature magic and martial arts. Band. Audience members will enjoy the upbeat, carefree music of the 60s and dance the night away. Located at Flushing Town Hall, the concert starts at 2 p.m. but show up an hour early for 60s-style dance lessons! THURSDAY, JULY 25 Enjoy a fresh twist on a classic tale of love and despair; Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Set in modern day Queens, two youths fall in love while their families, one Israeli Jews and the other Palestinian Muslims, carry on an ancient grudge, leading to mayhem in the streets of Flushing. The show is free and begins at 8 p.m., also showing on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28. Located at Flushing Town Hall. Hip to Hip Theater Company kicks off the fi rst show of its 7th season of Shakespeare in the Park performances. The fi rst show will be “Love Labor’s Lost,” at Crocheron Park in Bayside, at 7:30 p.m. All shows are free and will tour around Queens through August 15. Bring a blanket, the family and some snacks and enjoy the show. Children’s programming will begin 30 minutes before each show, and a full calendar can be found at www.hiptohip.org. SATURDAY, JULY 28 Vendors, performers, and arts and crafts booths will line the streets of Astoria for the Broadway Summerfest. Come and beat the heat with some of the borough’s best craft foods and artists. From 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. on Broadway between Steinway and 47th Street. ONGOING “Behind the Screen” is a one-of-a-kind experience that immerses visitors in the creative and technical processes of producing, promoting and presenting fi lms, television shows and digital entertainment. It is an innovative blend of 1,400 historical artifacts, video clips, commissioned artwork, video games and interactive exhibits. Visitors will be able to create animations, select sound effects and make fl ipbooks of themselves, among other activities. Recently acquired objects on view include makeup used on the stars of “Sex in the City”, a mechanical prop designed by Mike Marino for a climactic scene in” Black Swan” and molds and prototypes produced during the creation of a King Kong action fi gure.
