From 5 p.m. to dusk, Socrates Sculpture Park will be hosting the 2013 Summer Solstice Celebration at 32-01 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City. Get creative with solstice-themed art-making workshops presented in part by the Noguchi Museum and the Queens Museum of Art. There will also be face-painting, provided by Agostino Arts, as well as a special solstice ritual performed by Urban Shaman Mama Donna. Also featured will be a “silent disco” presented by Silent Storm Sounds Systems, a unique experience in which guests wear wireless headphones, entering into a dance party like no other while the surrounding atmosphere remains completely quiet. FRIDAY, JUNE 21 The Queens Botanical Garden will host a farmers’ market from 8:30 a.m. through 4 p.m. on Dalhia Avenue off Main Street in Flushing. A variety of vendors will offer countless kinds of fresh produce, eggs, meats, breads and pastries, honey, drinks and much more. FRIDAY, JUNE 21 and SATURDAY, JUNE 22 Located at 90-40 160th Street off of Jamaica Avenue, come and experience the Jamaica Farmer’s Market. What better way to celebrate your community than to by tasting and sampling along the countless rows of vendors selling fresh produce, cheeses, meats, beverages, pickles, honeys, breads and pastries and so much more? Takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. SATURDAY, JUNE 22 Starting at 1p.m., the Urban Rangers will be teaching the ancient art of archery. The workshop will instruct participants on the safe and proper way to use a bow and arrow. For adults, teens and children over eight years old. All equipment is provided and personal equipment is not allowed. The event will take place at the Forest Park Visitor’s Center on Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive. The Arista Hellenic Charter School, opening September 2014, will host a town hall meeting for the community on Saturday, June 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. The meeting, at the Transfi guration Church Assembly Hall, on 38th Avenue between 98th and 99th Street, will feature entertainment, refreshments and games for kids. Representatives from the school, which will serve grades K through 5th, will be on hand. SUNDAY, JUNE 23 Come enjoy The Art of Flamenco: a Dance and History Workshop for the Entire Family at 6 p.m. at the Flushing Library. The workshop will not only teach you some basic fl amenco dance steps, but the rich culture and history of the dance as well. The Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College presents its Guerilla Arts Ensemble. MONDAY, JUNE 24 Astoria Park is hosting its annual waterfront Independence Celebration from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on the sprawling Astoria Park Lawn. The Queens Symphony Orchestra will perform, followed by a spectacular display of pyrotechnics by world-renowned company Grucci Fireworks. THURSDAY, JUNE 27 Curated by Long Island City Artists (LICA), the exhibition “Bridging the Gap” is a celebration of the diversity and creativity present in the many communities of Queens. The exhibition was assembled through an open call to the artists of Queens and is open from noon to 5 p.m. from June 27 until July 14 at Flushing Town Hall, located at 137-35 Northern Boulevard.
