Addabbo Jr. will host a job fair for citizens over the age of 50. LeAp and Socrates Sculpture Park will host a reception to honor student artists/activists in LeAp’s Public Art Program who tackled major issues such as racism, religious tolerance, drug addiction and bullying. Students will discuss and present their public artworks, be honored by guest speakers and lead peer-to-peer workshops. The Park is located at 32-01 Vernon Blvd., LIC. SATURDAY, MAY 31 Book lovers will enjoy a free Book Extravaganza hosted by the Greater Astoria Historical Society. A large selection of new and used books of various genres will be on display, as well as DVDs and T-shirts. The event will last from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 35-20 Broadway in Long Island City. A Defensive Driving Course for insurance benefi ts and point reductions will be given at the American Martyrs Church of Bayside, 79-43 Bell Blvd. in Bayside from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For information and registration call 631- 360-9720. The cost is $45. Children ages 5-13 have the opportunity to make puppets under the direction of Lisa Iglesias, sponsored by the Sculpture Workshops series. The activity will take place at Socrates Sculpture Park at 32-01 Vernon Blvd. in Long Island City. Drawing inspiration from the park’s natural environment, children can create their own puppets out of repurposed textiles and plastics, and animate them in a collective puppet show. The event is free. Sneaker lovers should venture to the Sole Insanity Sneaker Event to buy, sell and trade sneakers. DJ Bobby Trends from Hot 97 will be blasting jams throughout the day, and over 150 vendors are expected to barter. Admission will be $25, and $100 to set up a table for trading. The event will occur from noon to 6 p.m. Broadway afi cionados should come out to Trinity Lutheran Church as the Astoria Symphonic Choir performs a melody of classics from Broadway plays such as “My Fair Lady,” “Guys and Dolls,” “The Sound of Music,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Damn Yankees,” “Anything Goes” and “West Side Story.” Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15-20 or $20-25 at the door. The church is located at 31-18 37th St., and the event begins at 8 p.m. Those who enjoy Turkish food will enjoy the Second Annual Turkish Food Fair and Contest. The Turkish Cultural Center of Queens will bring a variety of Turkish food, drink and hospitality. First prize will be awarded $250 and second place $150. Admission is $25; $10 for children 7 to 15. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Sunnyside Community Services Center, located at 43-31 39th St. in Sunnyside. The American Bolero Dance Company presents “Gabriela Granados: Retroperspectiva,” a spectacular showcase of Spanish culture. It details the fl amenco dance, Spanish classics and zarzuelas. SUNDAY, JUNE 1 The critically acclaimed Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, in partnership with Flushing Town Hall, presents a staged reading of “A DREAM OF RED PAVILIONS,” a world premiere adapted by Jeremy Tiang from the classic Chinese novel by Cao Xueqin, co-directed by Tisa Chang and Lu Yu.
