They are special sushi. My rolls are very fancy,” said Gary Chen, owner of Huikai and longtime sushi chef. He uses soybean paper rather than seaweed to wrap the sushi. Right now, he uses green soybean paper, but hopes to use other colors of paper in the future such as pink and yellow. All of his sushi is cooked, and vegetables are available at the stand as well. Kai Kainan Chen, of Flushing, the owner and cook of Kai, first participated in the LIC and Astoria Fleas on Memorial Day weekend. Chen gave out some samples during his inaugural weekend at the flea markets and got a good reaction from customers. He thinks that the coming weeks will get better and better: “Flea has that potential,” he said. At his stand, find a rice bun and chicken burger. He also hopes to bring pickled green beans and ground chicken to the flea market audience. Zha Pan Asian zha-ny.com @ZhaPanAsian F a c e b o o k . c o m / ZhaPanAsian Find Pan-Asian cuisine at the Astoria Flea starting this weekend at Zha Pan Asian, “home of the original Asian fried rice ball.” Don’t leave without trying one of their unique flavors of fried rice balls, including Thai yellow curry tofu and Chinese barbecue pork. Zha Pan Asian rotates the fried rice balls offered. “People suggest what we should do and we try to come up with that,” co-owner Sang Hoon “Heezy” Lee said about the rice ball flavors. He said that he and co-owner Steve Luw try to be creative with the items they offer to customers. Weekly specials include Korean fried chicken with scallion pepper waffles and the Hawaiian breakfast with sous-vide egg yolk, Portugese sausage, Furikake rice and bonito flakes. Nupur Arora 917-415-3823 @mantrabynupur Facebook.comComfyCustomClothes Designer Nupur Arora gives customers a unique experience at the Astoria Flea every other Sunday: they can choose from a variety of fresh, diverse fabrics with exotic prints and pick a silhouette, and the item of clothing will be custom made to their size. “It’s very tactile process, a very touchy-feely thing,” Arora said. If the piece involves embroidery, a design studio in India does the elaborate embroidery. The customer can have the completed item shipped for free or can pick up the order at the Flea. For those who prefer instant gratification, Arora always brings some items from her Mantra by Nupur collection to the flea market in a variety of sizes. Every item is unique, but if an item in the wrong size catches a customer’s eye, it can be taken in if it’s too large, or, if Arora has the fabric, it can be made for the customer. Arora first set up a stand at the Astoria Flea two weeks ago and found the crowd to be very receptive. She said that she is thankful for the opportunity to work on visibility, branding and how she wants to evolve her collection. ASTORIA FLEA TO BE FEATURED IN ‘FLEA MARKET FLIP’ Visit the Astoria Flea this weekend, and you just might get on television (or at least see some filming) — HGTV’s “Flea Market Flip” will be at the flea market at the Kaufman Astoria Studios backlot this Sunday. “Flea Market Flip” gives contestants $500 to find, buy and fix a piece of furniture at a flea market. Contestants later sell their flipped creations for a larger sum and battle to see who can make the largest profit, according to hgtv.com. Spend some time browsing the furniture stands, and you just might see some of the action! Visit the Astoria Flea on 36th Street between 34th and 35th avenues on Sundays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Also check out the LIC Flea & Food on Saturdays at the outdoor lot by the waterfront at the corner of Fifth Street and 46th Avenue. Items for sale include food and drinks, collectibles, antiques, arts and crafts, fashion and more.
