During the celebration, boys and girls were dressed up in clothes inspired by those from 1914, with girls wearing long dresses and boys donning loose-fitting trousers and hats. Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina also joined the students for the festivities. CONGRATULATIONS Award-winning broadcaster Rita Cosby joined NY1 host Pat Kiernan as co-host of 77 WABC’s “The Ride Home” on May 21. “The Ride Home” is a drive time show featuring information, insight and opinions on news, sports and pop culture with an emphasis on the New York area. “The Ride Home with Pat Kiernan and Rita Cosby” airs weekdays from 5 to 6 p.m. CELEBRATION P.S. 214 - The Cadwallader Colden School in Flushing had a Plant Day celebration with an American Heart Association Teaching Garden as part of an education initiative to help build healthy bodies and minds. The Plant Day Celebration was held on Monday, May 12, and included lessons on aerating soil, garden safety, transplanting seedlings and more. The P.S. 214 Teaching Garden was created using American Heart Association science and nutrition guidelines coupled with information from gardening and education experts. The program combines nutrition education with garden-based learning. Awards Karla Padawer Solomon, who is graduating this May with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, won a Fulbright Scholarship to Spain. She was inspired to apply for the Fulbright last Photos courtesy of Queens College year, after taking summer courses at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos through the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC). She plans to pursue a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) after completing the Fulbright. Chloe’ Skye Weiser, who graduated Queens College last year, is the recipient of a 2014- 15 Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in the Czech Republic. With a BA in English and anthropology, she has tutored ESL students in the QC Writing Center for four years and is currently an art therapy mentor at NY Asian Women’s Center to teens affected by domestic violence. Weiser has already studied in Greece and Israel and plans to attend graduate school abroad.
