But unfortunately, many smokers remain unaware of the extent of physical damage caused by their habit. Nor are they aware of the resources available to help them quit smoking. To meet this challenge, the World Health Organization (WHO) and their partners call for action towards reducing tobacco consumption and ultimately saving lives through their annual World No Tobacco Day on Saturday, May 31. The World Health Organization states that “the global tobacco epidemic kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600,000 are nonsmokers dying from breathing secondhand smoke.” Unless we act, the epidemic will kill more than 8 million people every year by 2030. More than 80 percent of these preventable deaths will be among people living in low- and middle-income countries. By establishing an annual World No Tobacco Day, the World Health Organization aims to protect against the shattering health consequences due to smoking, including the social, environmental and economic burdens of tobacco use. This year, WHO’s 2014 campaign has specific goals which include pushing governments to increase taxes on tobacco and for individuals and civil-society organizations to encourage their governments to increase taxes on tobacco to levels that reduce consumption. Research shows that higher taxes are especially effective in reducing tobacco use among lowerincome groups and in preventing young people from starting to smoke. A tax increase that raises tobacco prices by 10 percent decreases tobacco consumption by about 4 percent in high-income countries – and by as much as 8 percent in most low- and middle-income countries. Reality seeps through these figures since higher cigarette prices that result from increased taxes are endured disproportionately by low-income smokers. In 2010, smokers with incomes less than $30,000 spent 20 percent of their income on cigarette purchases. The New York Tobacco Control Program was recommended to develop and implement interventions to address disparities in smoking rates, particularly for African-Americans; Hispanics; and those with low income, limited education, and mental illness. According to the New York State Department of Health State and County Indicators, one in every 6 residents in Queens County is an active smoker. The Queens Quits Cessation Center has had tremendous success in the overall progress made in New York State in reducing the prevalence of adult cigarette use. Outreach and educational activities have targeted provider practices and effectively systematized tobacco cessation efforts for every patient at every visit. This increased provider efficacy in offering specific and structured support to patients has led to a marked increase in the use of the New York State Quitline for residents in Queens County. The New York State Smokers’ Quitline (1-866-NYQUITS) and Queens Hospital Center’s Smoking Cessation Program (718-883-4208) are just two of the free resources available for smokers who are thinking about quitting and to receive free nicotine replacement therapy, like the nicotine patch or gum. Let’s join the World Health Organization’s push in reducing tobacco use by leading by example with a healthier Queens on Saturday, May 31 for World No Tobacco Day, by sharing these resources with our family and friends.
