APAC ARTISTIC DIRECTOR STEPS DOWN The Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC) will soon say goodbye to its artistic director for the past six years. Tom Wojtunik, who has been APAC’s artistic director since 2008, will be stepping down on June 30. During his time at the nonprofit, he has helped raise the artistic profile of the organization by expanding programming to include workshops and main stage productions of new work. For his final production, he will direct Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Allegro,” opening May 1. “I am forever grateful for my time at APAC and so very proud of the work we produced on our main stage and how passionately audiences responded to those productions,” Wojtunik said. “APAC has earned its place as one of the major cultural institutions in Queens, and I look forward to watching it continue to grow.” Recently, APAC welcomed Erin Moore as the new executive director, replacing Taryn Sacramone. State Sen. Avella allocates $275K to renew Bayside Hills green space BY LIAM LA GUERE [email protected] @liamlaguerre State Sen. Tony Avella allocated $275,000 toward the revitalization of the Captain Dermody Triangle on 216th Street. Avella made the announcement with members of the Bayside Hills Civic Association during their annual Spring Festival on Saturday, April 26. “Dermody Square is a perfect place for Bayside Hills Civic to use for their community events,” Avella said. “It is really a shame that the City allowed the conditions of this park to become so poor by failing to maintain the site over the years.” The green space, which was named for outspoken abolitionist William C. Dermody, who was killed in the Civil War, is in need of repairs to its sidewalk and lawn and to the stone monument at the center of the triangle. “The park deserves it,” said Michael Feiner, president of the Bayside Hills Civic Association. “It’s unbelievable that finally the community of Bayside Hills wins something for a change.” Photo Courtesy of LaGuardia Airport Marriott THE COURIER/Photos by Liam La Guerre Michael Feiner, president of the Bayside Hills Civic Association, holds the $275,000 check from state Sen.
