22 The Queens Courier • may 1 , 2014 for breaking news visit www.queenscourier.com Fast food for thought In one of the most widely broken “exclusive” stories of the year, Leroy Comrie will challenge embattled state Senator Malcolm Smith in the Democratic primary election in September. Comrie, former Queens delegation leader in the City Council, attorney Munir Avery, Navy veteran Bernadette Semple and Clyde Vanel, also an attorney, are in the contest with Smith. Smith goes on trial in federal court on June 2 and insists that he’s still running although it’s hard to figure why, except perhaps that it is legal in New York for pols to use campaign funds for legal defense. Comrie’s ties to the community go back to the 1990s as chief of staff to his Council predecessor Archie Spigner and as president of the school board in District 29. Given the résumés of his opponents, this isn’t shaping up to be much of a race. Mayor de Blasio has scored another “win on charter schools,” by way of an agreement with longtime foe Eva Moskowitz, finding homes in vacant Roman Catholic parochial schools for the three of her charters he tried to evict two months ago. One, Success Academy Jamaica will move into the former St. Pius X School in Rosedale, Queens. After Hizzoner attempted to face down Governor Cuomo on his proposed pre-K funding “millionaire tax,” the Gov rammed through a budget that not only funded pre-K without the tax, but also forced the city to either make room for POLITICS FROMHERE by VICTOR G. MIMONI [email protected] charter schools in public schools or subsidize their rent of private space. For the gravy on these “wins,” the city is also expected to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on repairs and cleanup at the sites, on top of ponying up for the leases. Speaking of self-confidence, after U.S. attorney Preet Bharara suggested he might probe gubernatorial interference and the shut-down of the Moreland Commission, Governor Cuomo’s response defines unfazed. “It’s my commission, my subpoena power ... I can appoint it, I can disband it. I appoint you, I can un-appoint you tomorrow ... I can’t ‘interfere’ with it, because it is mine.” So there. Of all the earth-shaking political news, I am shocked, shocked to find that 20-part allegation from the U.S. Attorney alleging that someone in the restaurant business, in this case Staten Island Congressman Michael Grimm, might hide cash and pay people off the books.
