During the New York Careers through Culinary Arts Program Scholarship Awards Breakfast on Friday, April 11, 21 students were awarded culinary scholarships to attend the most prestigious culinary schools in the city and across the nation. The scholarships ranged in value from $2,000 to $104,000. Two Long Island City High School students took home the biggest awards. Melanie Vives received $105,800 from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) Full-Tuition Scholarship and a CIA Community College Stipend of $2,950. Uriah Thompson was awarded $108,624 for the Johnson & Wales Full- Tuition Scholarship. BOROUGH PRESIDENT HONORED Queens Community House (QCH) honored Borough President Melinda Katz and Community Board (CB) 6 Chair and QCH Director Emeritus Joseph Hennessy during its Spring Event on Tuesday, April 1, in Forest Hills. During the event, Katz presented a proclamation to Hennessy, who also received the 2014 Queens Community Builder Award from QCH and was awarded a citation by City Councilmember Karen Koslowitz. QUEENS COUNTY YOUNG DEMOCRATS More than 50 members of the Queens County Young Democrats (QCYD) gathered to speak with Congressman Joseph Crowley in Woodside. Crowley, also the Chairman of the Democratic Organization of Queens County and Vice-Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, answered questions about his work in the House of Representatives and discussed political issues throughout Queens. “We were honored to host Congressman Crowley and give our members the opportunity to meet and speak with him,” QCYD President Hersh Parekh said. CONGRATULATIONS ART WINNER One sixth grade Flushing student was recognized for her artistic talent. Assemblyman Edward C. Braunstein announced Laiel Bravo, a student at Adrien Block I.S. 25, as the winner of his Women’s History Month Art Contest. Bravo won for her portrait of Clara Barton, the Founder of the American Red Cross. “Congratulations to Laiel,” Braunstein said. “Nearly 150 students from schools in Queens participated in my Women’s History Month Art Contest and I was very impressed with their artistic entries.” ACUPUNCTURE AWARD State Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky received the Acupuncture Humanitarian Award from the Acupuncture Society of New York for her work on legislative issues that promote the safe practice of acupuncture. EASTER EGG HUNT Easter came one week early. The Northeast Queens Republican Club hosted a free Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 12, for children in Bowne Park. About 150 children showed up for the event, which featured the Easter Bunny and 800 plastic eggs, stuffed with toys and candy, hidden in the park. Children were also provided with baskets for the hunt and the opportunity to have photos taken with the Easter Bunny.
