Weidman, Ph.D., Associate Professor of English and Director of American Studies at Queens College (CUNY), will discuss the poetry of the famed American author Herman Melville. Born in 1819 in New York City, where he spent most of his life and earned his living as a customs inspector, Herman Melville is best known for his novels Moby-Dick, Billy Budd, Typee, and other works. However, at the outbreak of the American Civil War, he stopped writing novels and short stories and turned to poetry, writing a poem about every battle in the war as the news reached New York City. He produced several collections of poetry before his death in 1891 and is now recognized as not only a great novelist but also a great poet who was arguably the first modernist poet in the United States. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited and available first come, first served.
