Sherman has dedicated her life to teaching people about why it is necessary to protect the environment through her work with the Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC). Sherman has been the president of the Board of Directors for APEC since 2007. “We are one of the largest conservation centers on the East Coast,” Sherman said. As leader of the board, Sherman oversees the finances and activities of the center. Sherman is also one of the founding members. At one point, Sherman worked as a volunteer for before becoming a member of the board of directors. APEC works with thousands of volunteers every year, hosting a wide variety of events for people of all ages. BACKGROUND: Sherman has been a part of Queens her entire life. She grew up in Long Island City and graduated from Queens College. She holds a professional diploma in Administration and Policy Studies from Hofstra University. INSPIRATION: Although working to protect the environment, Sherman said she also gains something personal through working with APEC. “I feel so peaceful when I’m with nature,” she said. Through her work, she is able to find a moment to get away from the hustle of everyday life and escape for a moment. She says she hopes that other people can find this kind of peace when they are near nature. FAVORITE MEMORY: Sherman said one of her favorite memories of working with APEC is when she gets to see the look on children’s faces when an animal is brought out of its cage. “It’s great just to see their faces light up,” she said. BIGGEST CHALLENGE: “It’s hard to get people to recognize that what happens in one part of the world can affect other people,” Sherman said. She says that most people are confined to caring about their small corner of the world, not aware of the ripple effect that their actions have.
