This special tasting event featured food, wine and cocktails from some of the most popular chefs, restaurants and beverage vendors. All proceeds directly benefit City Harvest, the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding New York City’s hungry men, women and children. National celebrities and athletes, local elected officials and community leaders gathered together to support the event, which featured appearances by renowned chefs, restaurateurs and television personalities Todd English, Ming Tsai, Chris Santos, Chris Nirschel and Miss USA, Erin Brady. Delicious food tasting samplings were offered from some of Queens’ finest restaurants and food establishments such as: Benchmark Restaurant Cascon Baking Company Christos Steakhouse De Mole Francis Lewis Pastry Shoppe Genting Palace Hilton New York JFK Little Bird Chocolates London Lennie’s O Lavrador Restaurant QEDC Entrepreneur space: Chee’ Bonnet, e-Desserts, Inc., Little Bird Chocolates and Mitchmallows Rudy’s Bakery and Café RW Prime The Old Time Vincent’s Clam Bar & Italian Restaurant White Castle A $100,000 contribution for City Harvest came through Resorts World’s charitable giving program – Resorts World Gives –an organization committed to improving communities and helping those in need throughout the city. Today, there are approximately 1.7 million New Yorkers living in poverty and struggling to afford basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter. CIMINO SPECIAL VISIT On Wednesday, March 5, Alley Pond Environmental Center enjoyed a visit from its 2014 Green Gala honorees. Executive Director Irene V. Scheid, Board President Rita Sherman, Head of Education Rosemarie Favuzza-Papachristou, Curriculum & Grant Developer Dr. Aline Euler and Terri Thomson of Thomson Strategies, LLC gave the three honorees a full APEC experience. Edward Chiang of Mizumi Restaurant was on hand representing his family; they are receiving the “Friend of a Green Queens” award. Alexandra Rosa of ARosa Solutions LLC is receiving the “Friend of the Environment Award.” She was the former chief of staff to the Queens Borough President. Fran Filloramo-Molitor, a long-time member of the APEC Board of Directors and former Board President, is receiving the “Helen Marshall Environmental Education” award. This is the inaugural year for this award, which was designed to honor environmental educators. PHOTO COURTESY ABC7 APPOINTMENTS The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) welcomes Cathy Hung as the cultural institution's Executive Director. Hung officially joins JCAL on March 24 after spending four years as executive director of The New York Chinese Cultural Center (NYCCC) where she created new programming, consolidated and enhanced financial status, and increased public and private funding. As Executive Director, Hung is responsible for providing organizational and visionary direction for the cultural institution, as well as overall leadership management and fundraising success of JCAL, including establishing collaborations between the schools and the Center. Prior to that her position at NYCCC, Hung served as the Deputy Director of Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts for three years. “We are delighted to have Cathy join JCAL as Executive Director,” said Tonya Cantlo Cockfield, JCAL Board President. “Cathy brings more than 20 years of experience in creative arts programming to the table. Her entrepreneurial spirit expertise will be a great asset as the Board works closely with her to position JCAL and the Jamaica Performing Arts Center for success in the coming years,” said Cantlo-Cockfield. Hung’s responsibilities will also include developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising and development strategy, as well as collaboration with staff and Board of Directors.
