What you need is a pop-up card! The Bayside Historical Society is currently showing visitors how to put together a homemade popup card to give to any of your loved ones. The cost of the workshop is $10 and you will be able to create an unforgettable gift. The workshop begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Bayside Historical Society which is located on 208 Totten Ave. Not everyone has the opportunity to make it through high school and obtain their diploma. This is why the Queens Library of Long Island City presents the National External Diploma program. This program assists adults who have the ability to earn a diploma, but simply have not had the chance to. For more information, call 718-752- 3723. The Queens Library of Long Island City is located on 37-44 12th St. The art of balance and tranquility is one we should all master. Instructor Mirelle Nitelle will be leading a tai chi session for beginners at the Queens Library of Woodside. Tai chi is one of the best ways to truly learn how to control one’s breathing and limit stress. This session will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. at 54-22 Skillman Ave. In respect to Women’s history month, “Mulan” and “Secretariat” and will be screened at the Queens Library of Cambria Heights. “Mulan” will fi rst be shown from 4 to 5:45 p.m. and “Secretariat” will be shown on the 31st. The Queens Library of Cambria Heights is located on 218-13 Linden Boulevard. FRIDAY, MARCH 18 Have you ever wanted to make science easier for your children to understand? If so, then you’re in luck. The Langston Hughes Community Library is providing a way for children from grades K through 5, to learn about the different states of matter through a story called “Dragons and Dreams.” This learning session will take place from 4 to 4:45 p.m. The Langston Hughes Community Library is located on 1001 Northern Blvd. in Flushing. SATURDAY, MARCH 19 Gender roles and feminism are such powerful topics. Explore their meanings at the “TALKaCTIVE: Performance Art Conversation Series,” hosted by the Queens Museum. This current program will discuss what it means to be feminine in a 21st-century context, as artists both facilitate the conversation and discuss their own experiences with performance art. The talk is free of charge and will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. The Queens Museum is located in the New York City Building in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. As part of this year’s Queens World Film Festival, the Museum of the Moving Image will be screening “Smithereens.” This movie, set in the 1980s, shows the road a girl from Jersey travels upon in her mission to make it in the punk rock music scene. General admission is $15 and the movie will be shown at 7 p.m. The Museum of the Moving Image is located on 36-01 35th Ave. in Astoria. Do not be afraid to go out and learn new things about music today. Flushing Town Hall presents “Musical Elements of Qawwali.” Qawwali is a South Asian type of music, made up of different rhythms, clapping, lyrics and a call-and-answer style. You will have the opportunity to experience that which makes up a 700-year-old tradition as well as be exposed to the marvelous sounds of Qawwali. The show begins at 11 a.m. at Flushing Town Hall located on 137-35 Northern Blvd. If your child has a knack for building, then they will love the assortment of Legos available at the Queens Library of Woodhaven. Children may come in and play with a variety of Legos, as the only thing limiting them are their imagination and the Lego pieces fi tting into one another. This Lego-building time is from 3 to 4 p.m. The library is located on 85-41 Forest Pkwy. Check out some sensational dance moves at the Queens Library of Richmond Hill. The NYC Bhangra Dance Company will be performing at noon, demonstrating different forms of Indian dance as they move to the superb rhythms of Bollywood.
