The Astoria spot has a cozy, charming front interior followed by a sprawling back dining room. Maizal, which translates to “cornfield” in Spanish, was established in 2014 by co-owner Leo Zelaya, his brother and niece. The family also opened up Maizal’s Staten Island location in 2010, prior to an Italian restaurant in 2002. Zelaya has had a passion for cooking since childhood, resulting in his extensive experience in the food industry, corporate and nonprofit organizations. Maizal creates a glimpse of Mexico through their authentic meals and drinks. The sweet plantain with garlic shrimp and avocado ($13.95) is one marvelous starter. Diners will delight at this decorated plate, since the cajeta and three-alarm sauce are sprinkled in a crisscross fashion. The plantain is thick, sweet and chewy with melted jack cheese on top. The shrimps are extremely soft and seasoned with a mixture of garlic flavors. The restaurant’s guacamole (single $9.95; double $15.95) is simply to die for. The heavenly dip is crafted with fresh cilantro, tomatoes, onions, avocados and jalapeños, leaving a distinctive taste in your mouth. One of Maizal’s most traditional dishes is the Mole Poblano. This specialty originates from Puebla, Mexico, and combines several ingredients like peppers, plantains, ripe peaches, crushed walnuts and almonds, cinnamon and dark chocolate. The end result is a scrumptious mole that smothers two flour tortillas in dark chocolate, served with rice, beans and salad. The meat choices are chicken ($16.95) beef, spicy pork or veggies ($17.95) and shrimp (19.95). Quench your thirst with a passion fruit margarita that blends tequila and fruit juices. Another entrée is the skirt steak (carne asada) for $19.95. The steak is tenderly grilled and seasoned, with cebollas asadas (grilled green onions) rice and salad. Chicken lovers can taste the enchiladas rojas o verdes ($14.95) that provides delicate tortillas, stuffed with chicken and melted cheese.
