FRANCIS PREP’S MUSIC DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS ELITE GROUPS St. Francis Prep’s Music Department will present its annual Jazz/Pop concert on Friday, March 31, 2017. Originally a vehicle to highlight the school’s powerhouse Jazz Band, the concert has grown to include Prep’s top tier groups; their Honors Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Choir, and Chamber Orchestra. Prep’s Music Department is a benchmark for arts education, as they were the first department ever to be recognized by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools by earning their Music Credential, which is, “aimed at recognizing only those schools with the most sophisticated programs and the highest goals in music education.” Additionally, many of the students featured in the March 31st performance toured Rome and Assisi this past summer. It was the school’s 5th international tour. The evening will feature a wide range of popular Music, including our Honors Percussion Ensemble’s performance of Kansas’ Carry On Wayward Son, arranged by Prep senior Benjamin Santos. This is Benjamin’s second arrangement to be performed at Prep, as he arranged Toto’s Africa last year. The Honors Percussion Ensemble will also be performing a medley from the video game Undertale, which according to the ensemble’s director, Marc Silvagni, is the longest and hardest music they have attempted during his tenure. Our Chamber Orchestra will be giving one of the first ever performances of Brian Balmages’ Intrada, a work completed just this year. This is the second new Balmages work presented by the Chamber Orchestra this season. Finally, our Jazz Band will be presenting two works that according to the band’s assistant director, Murat Karaca, “really hit a home run,” Count Bubba, and Georgia On My Mind.
