Open Daily for Adoptions SUN - THURS 10AM - 9PM FRI - SAT 10AM - 10PM FOLLOW US ON According to nyc.gov, Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world. And St. Francis Prep is a mirror of both Queens and that diversity. It is a diversity that is celebrated not only in our almost 20 ethnic clubs, but also in our Academic offerings. Prep is a place where that diversity is not just celebrated, but embraced. The best way to embrace diversity is to learn about different cultures and traditions. One way we do this, in addition to the traditional academic setting of a classroom, is through our annual Interntional Night (this year, on MARCH 6TH at 6:00PM at St. FRANCIS PREP) This gives our ethnic clubs the opportunity to prepare special foods, perform traditional dances and music, and wear tradtional garb that again, highlight and celebrate the myriad cultures and heritages n our school community. Additionally, Prep’s Foreign Language Department immerses students in not only language, but culture. Led by veteran, award-winning teacher Joseph Licata, Prep’s Foreign Language department offers students the opportunity to study one of four languages (French, German, Italian, and Spanish) and again, their cultures. Our Foreign Language program is fully articulated to include four levels of French, Italian, and Spanish, and three levels of German. There are courses for Native Speakers, as well as Honors and Advanced Placement courses. We even offer courses in French, Italian, and Spanish for college credit. The philosophy of our Foreign Language Department states, “The successful acquisition of a foreign language is not necessarily rote memorization of verbs and their endings, nor grammatical concepts that cannot be applied to everyday life. In line with The American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages, the Foreign Language Department has Photo: Adriana Lopetrone Students perform a traditional dance at St. Francis Prep’s International Night undertaken the task of applying those standards to our daily instruction in the classroom. It is through these widely accepted standards that we endeavor to make the learning of a foreign language in our society useful and enjoyable to all of our students. The five main areas of learning a foreign language are as follows: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.” And it’s that last one, “Communities,” that’s crucial to a Prep education. And that brings us back to our annual International Night. The event wraps up a week-long celebration (there’s that word again) of the broad spectrum of cultures represented by our students and teachers alike. Throughout the week leading up to International Night, our Morning Prayer is offered in different languages, music from different cultures and heritages is played in between classes, and rehearsals ramp up in anticipation of the event itself. In short, the world is on display at Prep! Sophomore Audrey Blackmore spoke about ethnicities coming together and representing the love of their culture. Sophomore Ciarra Kruck see it as a way to educate “fellow Prep family members” about different cultures. International Night is a perennial highlight of the school year, and something both Blackmore and Kruck are looking very forward to. If you’re interested in sharing in our International Night on Friday, March 6th at 6:00PM, please contact our General Office at (718) 423-8810, or look for details on our homepage, www.sfponline. org.
