A new study from Johns Hopkins University may help explain why. Researchers examined data gathered from the ongoing Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging which began in 1958, tracking participants with yearly MRI’s. ey found that people with hearing loss had accelerated rates of brain shrinkage compared with normal hearing people of the same age. e structures which process information from sound were smaller in size in people with hearing loss. is might be the result of lack of stimulation; the “use it or lose it” adage ringing true. Furthermore, some of the structures that showed accelerated damage also play a role in memory. is may help explain the connection between hearing loss and dementia.
