The female Knights racked up 108 points in their second meet of the weekend, led by DaMira Banks and Terrilyn Britton’s sprinting prowess and senior Saralee Martelly, who dominated the field events. Banks placed first in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. In her 200-meter dash, she recorded a personal record of 25.50 seconds, while Britton finished not far behind in both events, placing second in the 60-meter with a time of 7.98 seconds, and third in the 200-meter dash in 25.94, her own personal best. Martelly stole the show in all three events she competed in on Sunday. The Belmont Abbey College transfer won the 60-meter hurdles by more than a second, and took the high and triple jump events both by wide margins. A particularly strong run, each of her five converted leaps in the women’s triple jump would have placed her a spot ahead of her nearest competitor. Junior Ronsheica Trotman and senior Danely Rodriguez also performed well, with Trotman taking Silver in the women’s 400-meter dash in a new personal best of 59.63 seconds and Rodriguez converting 12.65 meters on her last heave in the weight throw, placing her in third. Individual highlights for the men’s team included first place finishes by both John Martinez and Angel Alers- Rosario. Martinez took the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.67, crossing the finish line over a second before the second-place finisher. Meanwhile, Alers-Rosario took first in the men’s weight throw with a toss that cleared 15.50 meters. Liam O’Connor placed third in the shot put and the weight throw. Senior Michael Camacho’s season best of 23.39 seconds earned him bronze in the men’s 200-meter dash. Juniors Skandal Delince and Jacob Lascano also contributed to the team’s 63 point total by taking fourth place in the 400-meter run and 800- meter run, respectively. The Knights will go on to tackle the East Coast Conference Championship, which will be held for the first time at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday, Feb. 26. By ANTHONY GIUDICE agiudice@ridgewoodtimes.com @A_GiudiceReport In a closely contested CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) semifinal game, the LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC) Lady Red Hawks pulled away late to beat the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) Panthers on their home court, 69-58, to advance to the team’s first CUNYAC Championship appearance in school history on Tuesday, Feb. 16. “This is payoff justice for us,” said Anthony Alfaro, LAGCC head coach. “It’s really been a collective group effort from the administration to the players, coaches, managers. It’s been an unbelievable run and we want to keep it going.” The Lady Red Hawks were previously 0-2 in CUNYAC tournament games, so this year they were looking for redemption. The team relied heavily on their upperclassmen in the game as Kailyn Richburg and Sarah Edwards accounted for 41 of the team’s 69 points. Richburg had a game-high 21 points and added eight assists and six steals; while Edwards dropped 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds. For her efforts, Edwards was named the player of the game by CUNYAC. “Kailyn definitely stepped up, and Sarah’s been a silent leader all the way,” Alfaro said. “The two of them really carried us through tonight.” BMCC was in control early, and led by four after the first quarter. The Lady Red Hawks managed to make up that deficit and even took a slim three-point lead into the half. “They were very organized early on and it was just enough to slow us down,” Alfaro said. “I knew we had a game at first tip-off.” LaGuardia pulled away from the Panthers in the fourth quarter by starting on an 8-0 run that led them to victory. LaGuardia will now turn their attention to a Bronx team that mounted a seven-point fourth quarter comeback to advance past the Hostos Caimans. Last season, Bronx defeated LaGuardia in the CUNYAC semifinals.
