With college tours, SAT tutoring, and a case worker offered for each participant, this program has given the community’s teenagers opportunities that they may not have thought were feasible and have helped them to reach their full potential. Andrew spent the first few months of the program working in one of the Y’s Out of School Time After School Programs, where he assisted children with their homework. He then went on this past summer to work at summer camp, where he grew from being tentative and uncertain to outgoing and confident, as he demonstrated an amazing work ethic and really thrived. As a high school senior, Andrew is working at the Little Neck After School Day Care Program, where he has taken initiative and shown a strong commitment to his future. Spending countless days working on his college applications, preparing for interviews and meeting the demands of senior year, it was a proud moment when Andrew sent a text message to his case worker simply stating “I GOT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Earlier in the day, he had an interview at CUNY NYIT, where he was accepted on the spot. Andrew followed up his excited message with another one, “I couldn’t have done this without your help. Thank you so much for everything. The In School Youth program is emerging as one of the Samuel Field Y’s most popular and transformational programs serving teens, along with their teen leadership and community service group, Teen Council. While the two different groups join together for philanthropic purposes (volunteering at community wide events and hosting multiple fundraisers a year), Teen Council has been one of the Y’s most popular social groups for decades as it continues to provide teens with a supportive environment to share their concerns, questions, and just be comfortable When Teen Council isn’t out volunteering their time at a food or animal shelter, or walking for causes like MS and Breast Cancer, they’re meeting to discuss their future endeavors – both together and individually - as well as sharing their thoughts and experiences on various topics under the guidance of their outstanding professional adolescent services team. With the stresses of teenage life, it’s great to have a place to come and have the support of your community. With an annual budget of over $15 million, the Samuel Field Y provides a full range of services including mental health, cultural, educational and recreational activities to over 35,000 individuals each year. Business Council partners Men on the Move and Minuteman Press of Bellerose worked with the Y’s staff to gather donations for Sandy and ship them out to the Rockaways.
