 Where Has the Time Gone?
We oft en hear people say that they
don’t know where the time has gone.
With so many activities competing for
our attention, it is vital to make the most
of our time each day. Everyone has 24
hours to use every single day. How will
you use your next 24 hours?
Here are some tips to help you get the
 most out of your time:
 1. Do a TIME STUDY – When you
devote the time to observe and analyze
the steps it takes to perform your job,
you will be able to fi nd ways to increase
your productivity. Try this exercise: take
a typical two-week period and jot down
everything you do and how long it takes
to do it. Th en, analyze the results to
determine where you spend the majority
of your time. Ask yourself, am I spending
at least 80% of my time on the most
important matters that will make a difference
 to myself and my organization?
Th en make the changes necessary to
either delegate, eliminate or automate to
 free up some valuable time.
 2. Set SPECIFIC times to check your
business email. Most of us have a constant
fl ow of emails during the day.
Th e beauty of email is that,
 unlike a text, most people
 don’t expect you to answer
 their email immediately. In
order to get control of your
 email, make sure that you
 build time into your work
 schedule to check email
 and stick to that schedule.
It may be once or twice a
 day, depending on volume,
  but it is certainly not
 every 5 minutes. Your schedule
 may include responding
 to emails for 30-45 minutes
when you arrive at work and
 then again for another 30-45
minutes towards the end of the day. If
that isn’t enough time, do a quick check
for urgent matters mid-day and reply
 immediately, leaving the non-urgent
emails to wait until your next scheduled
 email session.
 3. TURN OFF your email and social
media notifi cations. You know those
beeps, bings and pop-ups that tell you
when you have a new message or notifi
cation? Th ose bings and beeps can
 destroy your focus and productivity!
   Give your brain
 the ability to focus and
 improve your performance
 by turning off unnecessary
 and distracting noises.
 4. SET A TIMER when
 using Social Media. It’s easy
to get drawn into the wide
 variety of information on
the internet. Th ere are pictures
 to view, interesting links
 to open and updates from
 friends and colleagues. Before
we know it an hour or more
has passed and we end up
scrambling to fi nish what we
started to do. Sometimes the time spent
on the internet is positive because it may
energize us or give us the opportunity
to connect with others. Other times it is
just another Time Waster! Th e trick is to
do it CONSCIOUSLY. Whether it’s for
work or pleasure, set a time limit and
 then enjoy guilt-free internet time.
 5. TOP 3. Make a list every night of the
top 3 things you want to accomplish the
next day. Th e items you prioritize could
be anything that you feel is important
to get done. Th en make a commitment
to start each day by completing the
top 3 items on your list before anything
else.  Use a white board or post it notes
so you can easily see your TOP 3 every
day. Th en enjoy the pleasure of wiping
the board clean or throwing the post it
away when the project is complete!
