This is the first time in more than a decade that the housing development has not seen any shootings. According to Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who attended the celebration, a number of factors led to the increased safety. Investments were made at the Jacob Riis Center, a nonprofit organization that offers after-school programs for youth at the Queensbridge Houses. Additional lighting and security cameras have been installed, and an $87 million project to repair and modernize the roofs was completed this year. The Cure Violence program was also implemented. The program helps to train members of a community to “anticipate where violence may occur and intervene before it erupts,” according to its website. “It took concerted efforts from many people and organizations to reach this victory,” Van Bramer said. “Today’s Queensbridge is a far cry from years past, when residents complained of regular shootings and violence. I look forward to working with all of our community partners to extend the 365 days of peace for days, months and years to come.” Queensbridge residents celebrated one year without a shooting at the housing development.
