THREE GUYS FROM BROOKLYN HELPING THE COMMUNITY
COURIER LIFE, OCT. 25-31, 2019 25
BY CAMILLE SPERRAZZA
Three Guys from Brooklyn have been
good neighbors since 1975, offering the
community quality fruits, vegetables,
and groceries at affordable pricing.
Social and environmental
responsibility has always been very
important to them. Over the years,
they have been generous with food
donations, and have done their part
to improve recycling and to conserve
energy.
For example, they replaced all
lightbulbs at the store with LED
lighting, saving thousands of
kilowatts of energy per year. They
partnered with Metropolitan Paper
Recycling, hauling over a thousand
tons of waste from Three Guys per
year, reducing their environmental
footprint. They are also involved
in turning food waste into a
biodegradable liquid to be recycled
back to nature, reducing the amount of
waste sent to landfills by approximately
26,000 pounds per month.
They are now raising funds for a
good cause – one that is personal – and
they invite the entire community to
join them. They want to fight Multiple
Sclerosis, a disease that has impacted
more than 2.3 million people worldwide
– including one of the store’s original
founders, Phillip Penta.
Penta lost his courageous 20-year
battle with MS a year ago. To honor
his memory, his son, Phillip Jr., along
with dozens of family and friends, will
participate in Bike MS. The event
takes place on Oct. 21st, and is a
one-day, 50-mile ride through New
York City, organized by the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society. Details and
contributions are at the link:

Phillip Jr says, “Every mile I ride
before and during the race will be
fueled by my father’s 20-year fight,
and by the struggle that too many of
us wage against MS, including the
friends and loved ones who fight at
their side.”
Three Guys has set an ambitious
fundraising goal of $10,000, because
Phillip Jr. believes the community will
come together for this very worthwhile
cause. “The money raised will fund
lifesaving research, as well as services
and support for people affected by
MS,” he says. “Every donation, big or
small, will bring us closer to a world
where those suffering can all live
long, healthy lives, and eventually to
a world that’s free of MS.”
Food waste is another battle
Three Guys continues to fight
by partnering with the nonprofit
organization, Rescuing Leftover
Cuisine. Here, arrangements are
made for unused food and produce
to be distributed to places like food
banks and soup kitchens. “ We are
proud to say we donate, on average,
200-300 pounds of unused produce to
Rescuing Leftover Cuisine each day,”
says Phillip Jr. “In fact, in the month
of September, Three Guys donated
over 5,900 pounds of produce,
contributing to over 4,900 meals.”
An astonishing amount of food goes
to waste all over America each day,
and Phillip Jr. points out, “There’s a
lot of red tape involved in trying to do
good.” But, what’s important is this:
“We are doing our part to combat food
waste while trying to help people in
need,” he says.
