BROOKLYN BRIDGE

Offi cers with the Police Department’s
Special Operations Unit scaled the
Brooklyn Bridge as part of a training
exercise Friday.
The Police Department’s Emergency
Services Unit traversed the
iconic span’s main cable to the tower
on the Manhattan side of the bridge beginning
at 11 am.
The city’s top cops were secured
by harnesses to the bridge, but nonetheless
found the tactical maneuver a
daunting task.
“It’s so scary,” said one steely eyed
trooper as he descended the cable onto
the bridge’s pedestrian walkway.
That offi cer’s squad mate was more
enthusiastic.
“It was awesome,” said the cop.
Three to four police choppers circled
overhead during the exercise,
while tourists and passersby stopped
to watch the spectacle.
The training exercise prepares
police for bridge-based operations,
including rescue operations and responding
to potential bomb threats,
according to a spokeswoman for the
police department.
