 The Migdal
“Gateway to The Moon” is a
 new novel written by Mary
 Morris. Bern Rosenthal and
 Arlene Augenbraun will jointly lead
 the discussion on Wednesday, December
11, at 2:00pm in the Coleridge
 Lounge on the Arcade level.
“Gateway to The Moon” is an intriguing book
that spans five hundred years of history from 1942
to 1992. The narrative traces the plight of the Jewish
population in Spain, Portugal and the Americas resulting
from the Spanish Inquisition, depicting one thread
of the Jewish Diaspora. In addition, the story focuses
on a Converso Jew, Luis de Torres, who sails with
Columbus as his interpreter during the historical
initial voyage to the New World.
The book also deals with a contemporary Latino
Community in the town of Estrada de la Luna near
Santa Fe, New Mexico.  “Gateway to The Moon” is
the English translation for the town’s name.
Author Jodi Picoult reviewed “Gateway” in the
New York Times and wrote, “If you haven’t read
Mary Morris yet, start here. Now. Immediately.”
Bern and Arlene have the unique ability to pick
thought-provoking books, and this absorbing historical
novel will generate a most stimulating discussion.

MUSIC TO OUR EARS The Brooklyn College Alumni
 were privileged to attend
 a virtuoso presentation on
 October 23 by Judy Greenberg,
 who talked about and performed
 selection representing Music
through the Ages. Judy, a graduate
 of The Julliard School Of
Music, has a Master’s Degree in
 Music Education from Columbia
 Teachers College. She defined
 the significant periods in music
 as Baroque, Classic, Romantic
 and Impressionist and  brought
those periods to life by playing
pieces of the key composers of the
 times (Bach, Mozart, Chopin and
 Debussy). The audience listened,
 learned and enjoyed. Our thanks
to Judy, a wonderful teacher and
 a great talent.
