MIMONI The North Shore Towers Men’s Club welcomed a full house that included many returning snow birds at their April meeting and greeted them with a full list of outings and events for the coming months. The downstairs card room outside the Towers Movie Theatre was filled with club members — and a number of women guests — on Thursday, April 17, to discuss plans and schedules for late spring and summer. “The club is only about six months old and it has been well-received and grown far beyond our expectations,” said club president Al Fuchs. “I attribute this to the board and committees working together. Our members can look forward to a variety of scheduled events,” he added. The club meetings are usually on Wednesdays; they feature guest speakers and light refreshments. “We send out emails to everyone on our list and hope residents will take advantage,” said communications officer Jerry Gilbert, calling the turnout “wonderful.” The event schedule begins with a luxury excursion to Mohegan Sun on Tuesday, May 20, in Connecticut. The casino resort is providing courtesy buses to transport participants in climate-controlled comfort. Buses will leave NST between 9 and 10 a.m. and arrive approximately at noon. Departing from the resort at about 6:30 p.m., revelers should be back to the Towers sometime after 9 p.m. Participants will receive $50 in coupons for food and slots, according to events chair Gary Zwetchkenbaum. “Just reserve a spot and you can relax and socialize on the bus and have six hours of fun,” Zwetchkenbaum said. He stressed the need for residents and members to reserve seats so the club can get sufficient transport. Other scheduled events include an Ellis Island tour on Wednesday, June 4, and a trip to the World Trade Center and 9/11 memorial on Wednesday, June 18, in addition to the annual membership dinner on Tuesday, June 24. Wednesdays in July feature a walking tour of Brighton Beach (July 9), a half-day fishing trip and lunch on a Freeport charter boat (July 16) and a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game and dinner (July 23). “We send out emails to everyone on our list and hope residents will take advantage,” said club vice president Jerry Gilbert, calling the turnout “wonderful.” Plans are afoot for August excursions to Yankee Stadium and a concert at Belmont Race Track. A bus excursion and tour of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a poker tournament are also on the drawing board. After the regular meeting, guest speaker Fred Chernow, NST’s resident memory expert, gave those in attendance some pointers on how to remember names and important details during their everyday lives. “We see response increasing and it’s obvious the club is growing, but I hope everyone remembers to come to our meetings,” said Paul Nettler, another vice president. The guest speaker for the May 8 will be Robert Friederich, a CPA who is president of the Glen Oaks Co-op and also a leader of the Presidents’ Co-op and Condominium Council, an umbrella group seeking to get the city to do the right thing on taxes and other issues of interest. Ladies are also welcome at Men’s Club meetings and events. Here, members and guests get memory tips from Fred Chernow.
