EVELYN EVELYN AND AND HARRIS What kind of work did you do? Harris was a sales executive for Burlington Industries which was then one of the largest textile manufacturers in the country. He then went into his own textile business where he befriended David Zolondek. Decades later their paths crossed again when David and Carol moved into Building Two. Ev was a Psych and Theater major who became a social worker. She went on to a career in the ski business as an apparel buyer at Ski Stop in Plainview. Where did you live before coming to NST? Our first apartment was in Kew Gardens, Queens and after five years we moved to Freeport where we bonded with Linda and Bruce Savid as well as Arlene and Norman Basner. All three couples now live here. From there we moved to East Birchwood in Jericho where we raised our children Lisa and Jason. Where did you go after Jericho? Once the kids left the nest we felt it was time to indulge ourselves. We moved to Manhattan, which had been a dream: attending the theater, going to museums and concerts, really enjoying the cultural capital of the world. We found a place on East 64th and York and stayed there for 12 years. We were still working in Long Island so it was a reverse commute. Later on, Ev was with the Bartfield Gallery on 57th and 7th and loved it. Soon she was asked to become the afterschool director of the Manhattan New School. This really utilized her many talents. How did you spend your summers? For ten years we rented a house in Westhampton Beach which was a shorter trip than East Hampton and we loved it. We would drive out Friday after work and return early Monday morning. Our friends and kids were frequent weekend guests. What was special about August of 2003? We can never forget 4:10 PM on August 14th. This is when a major blackout disrupted power from the entire northeast region of the country. Ev’s 95 year old mother was living near us on the 29th floor. That afternoon we were together at a restaurant when the lights went out. There was no way she could get up to the 29th floor of her building. Our apartment was nearby and on the 7th floor. Somehow Harris took her, her aide, and her wheelchair up the dark seven flights with the help of a borrowed flashlight. They went up one floor at a time, Harris with the wheelchair and the aide with Grandma. After an hour they made it. The electricity was restored the next day. Grandma lived to be 103. Living and working in Manhattan all those years you must have met some famous people. At one point Ev was doing business with a British Holding Company that had an office in Manhattan. There was going to be a special promotion that coincided with a visit by HRH Princess Diana. It took place in a penthouse apartment and both Ev and Harris were invited. The day before, Ev was given lessons on how to curtsy when introduced to Princess Di. Two other women in front of Ev on the reception line were Barbara Walters and Donna Karan. Both Pinskys thought the Royal Princess was radiant and very charming. Harris thought Ev’s curtsy was the most graceful. How long have you been at NST? It’s almost three years and we love it....the amenities, the classes, the people and it is near Manhattan and our kids and grandkids. By FRED CHERNOW 4 North Shore Towers Courier n March 2015 A Blind Dat PINSKY: yyEv and Harris met on a blind date in ‘geographically neutral’ Manhattan. He lived in the Bronx where he graduated from De Witt Clinton and City College. She was from Queens having graduated Jamaica H.S. She was ‘out of circulation” for four years while at the University of Pittsburgh. Things ‘clicked’ and Harris asked her out for the following week. On the agreed upon evening Harris headed for far-away, bucolic Queens and his date. Missing from his pocket were the directions to her house. This was before cell phones and the embarrassed suitor had to find a pay phone and the necessary change to call her and explain his dilemma. This was quickly resolved and in 1968 they were married in Gates of Prayer Temple on Parsons Blvd. in Flushing.
