Ed Koch was New York in the 1980s.” It could have just as easily been titled “How’m I doing,” a catch phrase that will live in the minds of a generation of New Yorkers. The movie was truly a trip down memory lane. Although the word hate was in the title, the movie was more like a paean to his administration. He was the arch-typical New Yorker: brash, nervy, always ready with an extemporaneous quip or answer. One always knew where he stood. What was on his mind was on his tongue. The movie examined his many successes—putting the city on sound financial footing, rebuilding the Bronx—and some of his failures—closing a hospital in Harlem, which angered the Black community terribly. It showed him exhilarated by his successes and depressed by unfavorable events, such as the Mannes fiasco. The movie also spent some time examining his sexual preference. Was he or wasn’t he? In one scene, a direct question was asked of him to which he responded with a most un-mayorly expletive. But in truth, he did have a lifelong lover—The City of New York. About a third of our club’s snow birds winter on Florida’s east coast. In the last few months, they have had some very successful activities, such as dinner dances, brunches, even a cruise on the Inter- Coastal. Future planned activities include a brunch at the Marriott Hotel in Delray Beach and a dinner dance at the Carolina Club in Coral Springs. If by any chance you are reading this while basking in t h e s u n a r o u n d a pool on an eighty-five degree day, or know someone who is there and is not aware of these activities and would like to attend, call Al Fuchs at 917-612-5350.
