FILM PRESENTATION AND Q&A Thursday, March 26 at 7:30pm (in the large card room near the movie theater) FREE TO UNIVERSITY CLUB MEMBERS; $10 FOR NON-MEMBERS BY STEPHEN VRATTOS Shot in a black-and-white noir thriller style, this taut drama transports its audience to one of America’s darkest moments, the 1950’s McCarthy Era witch hunts, when paranoia was rampant, everyone was suspect and many were unduly victimized. CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn), with producer Fred W. Friendly (George Clooney), take a stand and challenge Senator Joe McCarthy (shown through actual footage) and expose him for the fear monger he is. Although their actions put both men at great risk, they stand by their convictions and help bring down one of the most controversial figures in American history. The 2005 much-lauded film garnered six Academy Award nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, as well as dozens of others, 87 nominations in all, winning 51 awards. Following the presentation will be a Q & A with University Club President Shirley Wershba—played by Patricia Clarkson— who was a CBS writer during the time of the movie and whose late husband, Joe—played by Robert Downey Jr.— was the producer of Murrow’s show. This is a rare opportunity to speak with someone immersed in one of the country’s most notorious events. With a robust career as a television writer and producer on such shows as Sixty Minutes and The MacNeil Lehrer Report, Shirley is a font of anecdotes from television history and not to be missed!
