6 North Shore Towers Courier n March 2014 FAST COMPANY Life Begins at Forty BY FRED CHERNOW North Shore Towers is approaching its 40th anniversary. Part of the celebration will include a video featuring some of our longtime residents. Building one resident Mort Schwartz, our professional videographer, has volunteered to produce a DVD commemorating this historic event. He did the very popular Danny Cavallo interview that many of you saw on Channel 995 with the invaluable help of John Virga and Marty Ragusa. Many of our longtime residents have interesting stories to tell. We want to interview you, even if you moved in a little later. We are also looking for vintage photos or memorabilia that you might want to share. Please contact Shirley Wershba in writing through the Concierge of Building Two or by phone at 347- 408-4270. She is the prizewinning CBS journalist who is coordinating this aspect of the celebration. Do you have questions about “the early days”? Would you like to be interviewed? Are there some anecdotes you would like to share? Contact Shirley and you will become a valuable part of our Anniversary DVD. In addition to showing the final product in the movie theater as part of the celebration, it will also be shown repeatedly on Channel 995. The material we collect will also be re-purposed by editing it into different versions for public relations, real estate promotion, and segments for Time Warner NY1 News and other media. Become a part of this Anniversary Celebration! HADASSAH HAPPENINGS On Wednesday, March 19 at 2 p.m. in the Coleridge Lounge, Building Three resident Eva Kessner will lead a discussion, “The Middle East:  What’s at Stake?” The reality to be considered is that the Middle East is in turmoil. Iran is racing toward nuclear weapons; Syria is in a civil war; Egypt is in revolt. How has United States policy dealt with this? This and other questions will be explored in what promises to be a lively conversation. All are invited. At 6:30 a.m. one day last October, Susan Posen of Building One heard a strange tapping noise from her 27th floor kitchen. After investigating, she found the source – a large bird was perched on the railing of her terrace. In mid-February her visitor was back, identified by naturalists at the Queens Zoo as a Peregrine Falcon. Once nearly extinct throughout most of the U.S. and Canada and still endangered in New York, they’re making a comeback. “How very exciting… it’s so beautiful,” Posen said. The raptors, which feed on small birds, rodents, frogs and even insects, can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour when they dive. Posen is hoping to get a glimpse of her speedy visitor in the future.
