Clinical dieticians Melanie Leitner (left) and Mona Benjamin explained good nutrition North Shore Towers Courier n February 2014 35 LIJ food gurus say ‘Get lean in 2014’ BY KATELYN DI SALVO The screen read “Get Lean in 2014” as Melanie Leitner and Mona Benjamin prepared their presentation for the residents of the North Shore Towers. After all the holiday goodies and cheat days over the past few weeks, it’s the perfect time to be reminded to maintain good nutrition and get some exercise. So Lietner and Benjamin, clinical dietitians at North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, came to the Towers on Monday, January 20, armed with educational materials and insights to help residents make healthy choices during the coming year. There was shock; some responded with gasps as the duo displayed pictures showing how much portion size has changed – and how much obesity has increased – in the past few years. Some of those in attendance were especially concerned about the benefits or drawbacks Residents got to grill diet expert Melanie Leitner after the event of taking multi vitamins. The team responded, “Multi vitamins are not necessary if you are eating a healthy diet. But as we know, many people do not, so vitamins just get everything you need in.” Benjamin then took the podium and spoke about sports and nutrition; she encouraged residents to get active along with healthy eating. “If you don’t take to a better diet you will not work out adequately or efficiently,” she declared. Some expressed their concerns about what’s right to eat before a walk, swim, or round of golf. Benjamin Photos by Katelyn Di Salvo recommended eating something with complex carbohydrates, like fruits or nuts, as well as things high in fiber. She also recommended staying hydrated before, during and after a workout. The team passed out a packet that included tips on how to live a nutritious and healthy lifestyle, and ended their presentation with a game of Jeopardy, where the residents were able to show off their smarts. Then they passed around some smart snacks with the refrain, “Remember to stay lean in 2014!” Towers Country Club Group Fitness Class Schedule FEBRUARY 1, 2014 All Classes are 50-55 min.
