Homage to an Aging Home
I'll admit:
It wasn't love at first site
when we were introduced.
It didn't start that way
when I took you to be
my home forty years ago.
You were a compromise.
Yet from that day forward,
we've stayed together
in good times and in bad,
in sickness and in health.
I restore you when you
fall apart, you shelter me
when I need to lay anchor.
No, you aren't my castle,
but you are my witness.
The children grew up here,
their children still come to play—
your rooms align with my story,
and echoes of voices I love
live within your walls.
We’re both older now.
We find belonging with each other.
You wrap me in mementoes,
I wrap blankets of flowers
around your aging frame
and breathe life into you
with colors and candlelight.
BY DR. NURIT ISRAELI
I wrote the following poem on the day our house was sold—a goodbye to our home of more than 40
years. I was truly looking forward to the next chapter of our narrative—a smaller, flatter, lovely North Shore
Towers apartment. Still, the house has been our witness, a treasure chest of memories. Its soul has been
crafted by us. Numerous patients found solace in the office I created in it, and the garden I gave life too
and lovingly nurtured has been my small haven. Saying goodbye was not easy, but I packed my memories
and moved on to a new path, filled with opportunities...
Yes, you're out of date,
my old-fashioned friend.
You’re cranky, and taxing,
and too often demanding.
I confess: for years, I dreamt
my life away from you.
Now that I prepare to leave,
I feel the love.
