Forced to immigrate to the US in 1983 and abandon his studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Gerardo (Jerry)
Ramos began his career in Human Services at the City of New York, Human Resources Administration, in one of
the largest homeless shelters in NYC. Thanks to his dedication and exemplary work, Jerry was awarded a college
scholarship; completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services at Boricua College and a Master’s in Urban Studies
at Queens College (CUNY).
Following a promotion to Regional Assistant Director for Adult Services for the Homeless, he supervised four shelters
with more than 3,000 residents and 300 employees. At HRA he oversaw a Vocational Training, Substance Use
Prevention and Housing program, the first of its kind in a shelter aimed at reintegrating homeless people as productive
members of the community. With support from NYC Department of Health and Mental Health, Jerry got his master’s
in clinical social work from Hunter College School of Social Work.
Today, Jerry oversees ICL’s Integrated Care division that includes outpatient treatment, care coordination, young
adult and family housing, outreach and case management, and supported employment. ICL’s goal is to expand
the innovative whole health model into a network of services that improves health outcomes for individuals and
communities.
Jerry is honored to receive the Latin Impact Award. He has always felt a deep connection with his Latin heritage
that motivates him to improve the lives of people in need. The most important role in his life was to care for his father,
Angel, who taught Jerry to always fight for his goals. After battling with six forms of cancer, his father died in 2011
but his fighting spirit lives on in his son.
