FROM THE PUBLISHER
Dear Readers,
As the calendar turns another page, it reminds me, yet again, how fast time flies and
how important it is to focus on what is important and sometimes overlooked. November
marks the return of the holidays not only means the arrival of the shopping season,
but also the giving season — when we try harder to help the less fortunate among us.
As this month’s cover story illustrates, despite how prosperous Long Island is, the
region still faces challenges in solving homelessness and food insecurity due in part
to the high cost of living, among many other factors.
For ways to help, check out our stories on the nonprofit Toys For Tots that ensures
underprivileged children receive Christmas gifts, how local business leaders box for
a cause at the annual Fight For Charity, and find five products you can buy that donate
proceeds to food banks.
Leading off our business section is a shopping season market outlook forecasting how
retailers are likely to fare post-Black Friday in the face of online sales increasingly
forcing the closure of brick-and-mortar shops. In health, read about the new specialists
that don’t require an appointment at Walk-In Dermatology. In family, we have pro tips for
avoiding family drama over the dinner table this holiday season. And in home, find stories on how to renovate a home
for those who prefer to age in place.
And in our important special section, Journey to Life Ever After, find our guides to funeral planning, and find out why
planning ahead is best.
As for the fun stuff, in Press Buzz, the team hit the streets in Smithtown to bring you all there is to see, do, eat, and
drink in this cozy little central Suffolk burg.
As always, don’t forget to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, and sign up for our twice-weekly
email newsletters rounding up everything you missed on the updated-daily longislandpress.com
Happy Thanksgiving!
