Local eats and treats Western Queens is known for its vibrant food and bar scene and in this issue, we’re giving you a look at several new establishments that have opened or that are set to debut this month. Oro, a new Italian restaurant in Long Island City, is serving up classic dishes with a modern twist. Chef Scott Andriani has made a career of transforming struggling restaurants and Oro is no different. Andriani was brought in to change the menu and add more authentic dishes. With handmade bread, a large selection of wine and appetizing food options, Oro should be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Ramen Burger exploded in popularity a few years ago and creator Keizo Shimamoto decided to turn his central prep kitchen in Long Island City into a full-fledged restaurant. Shimamoto will serve his famous ramen burgers along with his favorite ramen soups. With 20 varieties, Ramen Shack will have something for everyone. We also profile an Astoria chef who is making tasty desserts with a healthy twist. Nikola Dzurna is an up-and-coming chef and dessert artist. Dzurna makes vegan, raw and gluten-free treats that are custom made to order. Her desserts are usually made of ingredients such as cacao powder, almonds, ginger, and maple syrup, as well as a few “top secret” touches. They will also be sold at local coffee shops soon. Chipotle fans will soon have a reason to rejoice because the chain will open its fourth Queens location in Long Island City. Burritos, tacos and bowls will soon be easily accessible to western Queens residents. In addition to food news, this issue also showcases two Long Island City artists who used their art to pay tribute to those lost during the 9/11 attacks. Donna Levinstone and Tobi Kahn both witnessed the attacks and used their preferred mediums – pastel and sculpture to create work depicting the scenes they saw. Their work is displayed at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in Manhattan. As always, we cover the latest in real estate news and give you the latest events happening in your neighborhood.
