September is a recharging month for everyone and as we step out of summer and into fall, check your calendars because there are a lot of things to do in Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside. To start off, there is still more than a full month left of the LIC Flea & International Food Bazaar, which has seen amazing success since it began in June. LIC Flea has created fun weekends fi lled with a variety of foods, arts, activities and music for the whole family. This month three of our LIC Flea vendors swept the 9th Annual NYC Vendy Awards in Brooklyn. Luke’s Lobster took home the People’s Taste Award, Elmhurstbased Itizy ice cream won Best Dessert and Khao Man Gai NY was recognized as the Best Market Vendor. LIC Flea is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the corner of 46th Avenue and 5th Street in Long Island City until October 27. There are still a lot more surprises coming to LIC Flea, so don’t forget to make it your next weekend destination and come try these award winning vendors. The refreshing fi lled beer glass on our front cover belongs to a local brewery looking to put Queens back on the map with their one of a kind lager. We talked to the brewery’s owner who shared with us his experience of working on a barley wheat farm and turning his love for beer into a thriving business. In this issue, we sat down with the executive director of Socrates Sculpture Park who shared with us the risks he takes on deciding what pieces are shown at the park. You’ll also fi nd the opening of a brand new park on the Long Island City waterfront with a view to die for. A neighbor to Gantry State Park, this green space features an urban beach, a rail garden, dog run and play area featuring a children’s playground. Just right across the street, we welcomed a new school campus featuring a middle school and the Academy for Careers in Television and Film High School. We also celebrated the life of Benjamin Wheeler, one of 20 young lives lost during the Sandy Hook tragedy, during the co-naming of the Sunnyside street where Ben spent his fi rst months. After that, take a look at an incredible LICbased rowing program that has helped enable young boys and girls from under-resourced communities in New York City through competitive rowing. Also read about a nonprofi t arts organization that calls 5Pointz home starting a campaign to fund a brand new space to continue working with the community. We always welcome your feedback, ideas and want to hear from you. Start to enjoy those endless pumpkin fl avored treats and warm drinks, take a trip down to LIC Flea on the weekend and welcome fall with open arms. Happy Autumn!
