Invoking the cyclical and growing convergence between labor, consumption, and that which propels them, ‘Image Employment’ examines different ways artists use moving image work to engage and confront contemporary modes of production.” SEPTEMBER 2013 I LIC COURIER I www.queenscourier.com MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE 36-01 35th Avenue Astoria, New York 11106 718-777-6888 [email protected] “The Complete Howard Hawks” On view from September 6 to November 10 Howard Hawks (1896– 1977) was the flawless Hollywood director whose distinct personal style can be seen in classics such as “Scarface,” “To Have and Have Not,” “His Girl Friday,” “Twentieth Century” and “Rio Bravo.” The film series presents a 39-film retrospective of the great American director who made films in almost every conceivable genre, while maintaining a style that was direct, energetic, and lucid. Series highlights include new, rarely seen, and/or restored archival 35mm prints of “Ball of Fire”(1942); “I Was a Male War Bride” (1949); “Scarface “(1932); “The Dawn Patrol “(1930); “Only Angels Have Wings”(1939); as well as the silent feature “Fig Leaves” (1927) and much more. Photo courtesy of Park Circus NOGUCHI MUSEUM 9-01 33rd Road (at Vernon Boulevard) Long Island City, NY 11106 718-204-7088 [email protected] “Isamu Noguchi and Qi Baishi: Beijing 1930” On view from September 25 to January 26, 2014 The pieces of this exhibition will be part of the first time Isamu Noguchi’s figurative ink scrolls are displayed together with Qi Baishi, the poet, seal carver and master traditional ink painter who Noguchi studied with in 1930 in Beijing. The exhibition explores the “pivotal but lesser-documented moment of Noguchi’s career” and shows the importance Noguchi’s study with Qi Baishi really was to the artists who completed 100 ink scroll paintings.
