Happy July, readers!
Summer is rolling on and as always, we at the LIC Courier
Magazine have the latest news coming out of western Queens.
The Queens Public Library is celebrating the 70th an-niversary
of its Queensbridge Houses branch in Long Island
City. The library outpost received expanded their Tech Lab
services to four days a week to meet the growing demand of
digital literacy programs in western Queens.
From now until August 25, Queens Borough President
Melinda Katz presents her fifth annual Katz Concert Series.
Music lovers will be treated to a variety of genres from Mo-town
to orchestral music. Grab your family and check out the
nearest outdoor concert near you.
In our community news section, we remember Astoria
resident Luis Alvarez, a 9/11 first responder and advocate
for the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. We also
head to Long Island City, where lawmakers celebrate the
“historic” level of funding for parks in New York City. Read
these stories and more starting on page 22.
In our art section, we tell you about the “Urban Dance”
exhibit that is a collaboration between the Plaxall Gallery and
Long Island City Artists. The exhibit includes photos from 39
artists “that capture the contemporary urban experience of
cities worldwide.”
This month, we also feature a Long Island City artist named
Clare Stokolosa who is known for depicting everyday street
scenes in New York and Italy. The artist is returning to her
favorite Tuscan hilltop town of Cortona. According to Stoko-losa,
there is a link between her home borough of Queens
and Cortona: “I see them both as a part of me and the path
my life has taken.”
The Rude Gnomes startup theater is bringing back its
Commons Series for a second year. This time, the company
presents a free production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and
Juliet at Rainey Park, Queensbridge Park, Astoria Park and
Plaxall Gallery.
Turn to pages 44 and 46 to find out what activities and art
galleries are going on in Queens this month.
If you have any tips or news you would like to share, reach
out to me at jbagcal@qns.com. See you in August!
